FOUNDATIONS of DRAWING

17th JAN - 6th MARCH

8 x CLASSES

Pillow Studies, Albrecht Durer, 1493

This is a comprehensive eight week introduction course that explores the five formal elements of line, form, tone, texture, and composition.  Starting with an introduction to the principles of  drawing  with  mindfulness  and a tutorial on drawing tools and mediums, it finishes with the much beloved class on how to embrace mistakes. Each weekly class is structured around a study of historical and contemporary artworks, and a combination of online and offline exercises.

A playfully approachable course for beginners, as well as a revitalising refresher for practicing artists.

The ART of TRAVEL

20th MARCH - 24th APRIL

6 x CLASSES

The Catalan Atlas, 1375

A course for those with wanderlust! We look at how drawing has always been used to record travels and explorations, from the first known map of the world drawn almost 3000 years ago, to the spirit-world depictions of the San, to the Moroccan notebooks of Delacroix.

As we draw the places we've been, to the places we long to go; as we delight in journeys both geographical and metaphorical - it's clear that both drawing and travel hold the promise of new connections.

Exploring COLOUR

8th MAY - 26th JUNE

8 x CLASSES

An eight part kaleidoscopic, myth-busting, whistle-stop tour through the history of colour theory, with plenty of practical exploration and colour play.

I've been running courses on colour for five years now, and I still discover something new every time. Colour is a dazzling chimera of science, art, culture and philosophy. This course is a great introduction to the vagaries of colour through the often neglected  format of coloured drawing mediums.

It's a thorough, but always entertaining, series of classes that allows you to build your wonder and confidence from the bottom up

JULY - AUGUST (TBC)

PORTRAITS

4 x CLASSES

Elizabeth Peyton after Michealangelo, 2017

Explore the genre of portraits in the oft overlooked medium of drawing. We'll consider the full scope – from imperious self-portraits to dynamic group portraits; swaggering celebrity portraits to intimate family portraits.  Costumes, settings, pet portraits and object portraits: what makes a portrait a portrait? What does it take for a portrait to be 'true-to-life'?

Packed with tricks for bolstering compassion and humanity.

A THOUSAND WORDS

AUGUST - SEPTEMBER (TBC)

6 x CLASSES

Salvador Dali’s Don Quixote, 1946

This course explores the rich relationship between words and images – how they both support and depend on each other. It will look at artworks inspired by literature and at artworks that inspired literature; at the dynamics of comics; at writer-artists and artist-poets. We'll also explore how to create narrative in your drawing, whether it's a still-life or a portrait.

For book-lovers and storytellers

NATURAL HISTORY

OCTOBER - DECEMBER (TBC)

8 x CLASSES

Alexander Marshall’s Florilegium, c1620 -82

This very popular course themed around Natural History celebrates the craft of observation. It's a course brimming with colour, texture and a global cast of characters, both human and non-human! Explore the delights of citizen science; the complexities of collections; the whimsies of zoologists, and, of course, the fruits of mindful drawing

 FAQs

  • Firstly an internet connection, a device, and a Zoom account. These classes are really about learning the art of looking, and therefore are best done on a larger screen like a computer or iPad, rather than a phone.

Also, somewhere where you have space to draw and can immerse yourself in the activity without distractions.

Finally, anything you can make a mark with, and anything you can make a mark on: markers, pencils, ballpoint pens, crayons, pastels, charcoal, printer paper, a sketch book, cardboard, envelopes etc. I will give you advance notice if special mediums, papers, or objects are needed for the class, but these will usually be things you can find around the house.

  • No! Both the online and live workshops are suitable for all levels, whether you haven’t drawn since school, or are a practicing artist. These classes are focused on encouraging you to see drawing as an exploratory process and practice. They are beneficial to established artists, for both reigniting curiosity in their own practice and revisiting foundations; and they are beneficial to beginners looking for a structured space in which to explore drawing. Although skill level is irrelevant, a sense of play is an advantage

  • All the classes are recorded and are available for up to 2 weeks afterwards

  • Yes, most of the classes are offered as single drop-in classes! You can follow on instagram or subscribe to the weekly newsletter to know what’s happening each week.

  • In an effort to make these classes accessible to as many as possible, I am always open to discussing payment options. You can pay in installments or pay in trade, (some of the things and services I’ve accepted include artwork, proofreading, and a tattoo.) Please reach out.

Over six evening sessions, I’ve learned more practical tips on how to look, see, and draw, than I did in a full year of standing in front of an easel in first year varsity.”

I loved your colour course.  I could barely wait for each class.   I love the care you take  and the depths you take us to. You made colour thrilling and profound, you make art making thrilling and profound.”

— Sarah

I just completed my fourth Drawing with Mindfulness course. Not only are they a reprieve from our mad world, but Rebecca teaches with great erudition and a sly whimsicality. Her research is generous and elucidating with slide after slide triggering ‘lightbulb moments’. Though the classes are held online, the page where people share their work builds a real community.”
